Universe in Quarentine
for
desestrutura open call I
During the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, the world outside our doors became a distant reality, with movement restricted to our immediate surroundings. The once familiar rhythm of urban life was suddenly replaced by a newfound confinement, prompting a dramatic shift in how we experienced our daily environment. In response to an open call from desestrutura — a platform spearheaded by curator Laura Belik — I embarked on a project to delve into how this enforced limitation redefined our understanding of walking, exploring, and interacting with our cityscape.
For one week, I undertook the task of meticulously documenting every movement within the boundaries of my restricted radius. This endeavor involved charting my routines, spontaneous detours, and even the seemingly mundane aspects of my daily travels. The result was a detailed map of my newly circumscribed universe, a visual representation of a world that had been dramatically compressed.
The project offered more than just a record of physical movements; it served as a profound exploration of how confinement altered my relationship with the city, the neighborhood, and my home. As I mapped out my journey through these now-intimate spaces, I began to notice nuances and details that had previously eluded me. The transformation from a bustling, expansive urban experience to a more introspective and localized one revealed new layers of connection and meaning within the confines of my immediate environment.
Through this process, I discovered how the pandemic-induced limitations on movement prompted my interactions with the cityscape, which became a series of reflective moments that reshaped my perception of the urban fabric. The project not only highlighted the impact of physical constraints on our spatial awareness but also how boudaries and limits - physical and virtual - can completely change the understanding of our immediate surroundings.
